Background:
Adrien Agreste was born the only child of the famous and wealthy Gabriel Agreste, one of the world’s top fashion designers. For years Adrien lived with his father and mother in a large mansion near the scenic Eifel Tower in Paris, France. He was raised in a very sheltered environment, homeschooled, and only acquainted with the children of other rich families. While he didn’t have much freedom he loved both his parents dearly and grew up hoping to make them happy.
Then one day Adrien’s mother mysteriously vanished and didn’t return. Adrien watched his father steadily become more and more distant, and all the more protective and strict. In hopes of winning his father’s pride and attention, Adrien applied himself to his studies and agreed to a career as a model for his father’s fashion line. Sadly it made little difference and Adrien grew increasingly frustrated with his father and his rules.
The final year of junior high (the equivalent of 9th grade in the USA) arrived and Adrien decided he wanted nothing more than to go to a public school with his peers. It was in front of the school gate that his fate began to change. Just as his father’s assistant caught him before he could enter the school, Adrien saw an elderly man who had fallen on the sidewalk. He stopped to help the man onto his feet before getting shuttled away back home.
Unbeknownst to him the old man he had helped was testing the kindness of others in search for those worthy of bearing the Miraculous, ancient Chinese treasures that give their wearers superpowers. Master Fu, the Guardian of the Miraculous, had decided it was time to call on new super heroes to protect Paris because of a rising threat. Somewhere in the city a villain calling himself Le Papillon had obtained the Butterfly Miraculous and began using it to transform regular people into supervillains.
Adrien returned home to find a small mysterious box in his room. When he opened it a strange little creature, a kwami, named Plagg emerged, telling him he could now transform into a superhero with the power of destruction. As the first of Le Papillon’s supervillains began wreaking havoc, Adrien took up the secret identity of Chat Noir and rushed to save the city. That was the day he first met Ladybug, the other new chosen Miraculous holder.
From that day forward Adrien began a life with a new taste of freedom however small. With some convincing from his aid, his father finally agreed to allow him to attend public school, and whenever trouble appeared Adrien took to his secret identity. As Chat Noir he grew close to Ladybug, even falling head over heels in love with her despite his feelings being unrequited. As Adrien he gained several friends in class, including Marinette who developed a major crush on him. Ironically Marinette was secretly Ladybug but neither of the pair knew the other’s identity and so their feelings remained “one sided.”
While Adrien was thankful for his time at school his father still limited his free time, and remained absent even after making plans to spend time with him. When a supervillain targeted his father, Adrien struggled to remain calm and narrowly avoided revealing his secret identity to his father and Ladybug. After the attack his father noticed the Miraculous ring on his son’s finger and although Adrien didn’t tell him anything about it, his father became suspicious.
Shortly after that day Adrien caught sight of his father flipping though an old book. With Plagg’s help he opened his father’s safe and took the book away for further investigation. When his father wasn’t looking, he snuck a glance and discovered the book was filled with illustrations of Miraculous holders and coded text. Adrien’s canon point comes just after that day, knowing that his father might be aware to some extent of the Miraculous’ existence. Adrien doesn’t know it yet but the Peacock Miraculous was among the items that were hidden in his father’s safe.
Personality:
“I don’t know Plagg… I didn’t think about it. I just followed my heart.”
Adrien is very much guided by his heart. That isn’t to say he doesn’t use his mind at all; he’s plenty book smart and creative but when it comes to how he views the world and ultimately how he makes decisions he does as his heart tells him to.
Adrien is a softhearted individual who looks for the good in most people. He's reserved and quiet around most strangers as he was raised to be polite and gentleman-like but he's friendly and charismatic once he's comfortable. Despite the misfortune of having a poor relationship with his father, Adrien still tries to view the rest of the world in a positive way and treat others kindly. Apparently his positive view of others can be misdirected. He starts off his first year in public school rather naive about how to handle social drama. At the time his only friend happens to be the class bully, Chloe, since they met during childhood and he finds the rest of the class set against him because he is "on her side." It takes some reflection on his situation before he manages to clear the air and begin making new friends. Even as the story continues Adrien is prone to being too nice or polite for his own good, especially towards Chloe who clearly makes him uncomfortable at times. He starts putting his foot down more often as he grows.
As with most people who follow their hearts, sometimes his emotions get the best of him. A villain's taunts can cause him to leap straight into danger and Ladybug has had to stop him short multiple times. He once lied to a sculptor who clearly had a crush on Ladybug because he let his jealousy get the best of him. He pouts and stews a bit when he's angry or disappointed. Adrien might seem very self assured at a glance but he has insecurities like everyone else and he doesn't always handle them maturely. He can be very stubborn. Adrien puts a lot of energy into suppressing his negative emotions, especially in regards to his father, but at times he loses his patience. Earlier in his story Adrien just about always follows the rules but once he becomes Chat Noir he becomes more rebellious. (Plagg deserves credit for encouraging him to break the rules.) He runs away to school, ditches his bodyguard to try getting to the movies, even participates in the party his father forbid him to have before tending to his responsibilities. Other times it's his passion and enthusiasm that get him into trouble. When Plagg first offered Adrien the chance to become a superhero he jumped at the call so quickly that he didn't let the kwami explain any details on how his super powers actually worked. When there's evil afoot you can count on Chat Noir plunging into the scene with the energy of a hyper child.
As Chat Noir, Adrien expresses himself in ways that he doesn't get to in his civilian identity. Chat Noir comes across as full of pluck and cheek, always cracking jokes and making puns, quick to tease his opponents and flirt with Ladybug- just brimming with confidence. He said himself that he's finally "free to say and do whatever he wants" unlike the good son locked away in his room. Chat Noir's persona is far from an split personality and more like an exaggeration of the parts of Adrien's personality that he has to suppress normally. If the regular Adrien Agreste son of THE Gabriel Agreste is the equivalent of music being played softly in the background his time as Chat Noir is a party with the music cranked up to eleven.
For better or for worse Adrien is often an idealist. He wants to do the right thing. He believes in concepts like true love and justice, and loves stories and anime. In many ways he idolizes Ladybug, imagining the perfect lady under the mask, so when he sees her act in ways that are less than valiant he's surprised and forced to adjust his image of her. He has lived a very sheltered life, imperfect and lonely yes, but still a life where he has been provided for while watching the outside world through the glass of a limo window. As previously mentioned, he has had to learn how to deal with new challenges and social problems that he couldn't have imagined before.
More than anything in the world Adrien wants to be loved. He fights for the chance to go to public school because he wants to make friends. He works hard to please his father, and gets his hopes up that things will change between them even after countless disappointments because he loves his father that much and wants to feel loved in return. He's sentimental and romantic at heart because he believes love is really that precious and amazing. He is all the more thankful for the chance he had to become Chat Noir because in turn he met Ladybug and now he has Plagg with him wherever he goes. The friendships he has made have steadily begun to transform his life. Even out of the mask, Adrien begins to express himself more freely to those he becomes close to. He begins to slip in more jokes and goofy behavior around his classmates. He allows himself to get angry and annoyed at Plagg. He even admits to his best friend Nino that he has a problematic relationship with his father.
Adrien still has a lot to learn about the real world and the realities within his own house but there's no doubt he will continue to follow his heart and grow as his story continues and his father's secrets come to light.

Adrien misses his mother dearly and he has grown apart from his father since her disappearance. In many ways he lost both parents when they lost her. Despite his efforts to reconnect with his father, Adrien has made little to no progress. Kyubey finds Adrien in a moment of weakness when he has just discovered that his father secretly knows something about the Miraculous. With the right questions from the Incubator, Adrien admits aloud just how frustrated and heartbroken he is about the broken household he lives in. Kyubey makes the offer to grant Adrien's wish to get his family back. Plagg tries to intervene but in his emotional state, Adrien sees no problem with trading that wish for helping to protect innocent people as a magi. "I do that already anyway." Kyubey seals the deal before too many questions get asked.
He wishes for his mother and father's reunion because he believes it to be the key to their family’s happiness and the return of their close bond.
“Je veux trouver Mère de sorte Père ne sera plus triste.”
“I want to find Mother so Father will no longer be sad.”
Kyubey grants Adrien’s wish and Mrs. Agreste magically appears, safe and sound in the Agreste mansion, but just as she arrives he’s taken away to Nyoi-Cho leaving a new hole in the Agreste family and Paris without one of its protectors. Kyubey conveniently didn’t clarify that the fight in Nyoi-Cho started immediately and might last an entire lifetime.
While Adrien has a magical transformation in canon already, his wish gives him a different transformation and powers that better match what he asked Kyubey for.
Adrien’s wish is about regaining something precious that was lost, reunion, and connections. It’s dedicated to another person but clearly for his own gains as well. Since the wish revolves around his parents there is symbolism in his powers that relate back to them, such as his father's fashion design career.
Passive ability: Thread Dowsing. Adrien’s passive power helps him find people and things that are missing. Whatever the search target is, it must be an object or person that somebody (Adrien himself, another magi, that dude down the street) is actively looking for. It is not applicable to non material items, locations, abstract things like "happiness," or that which the searcher doesn't know or possess (eg "find me a nice tie at the store").
When he concentrates he can see the end of a “string of connection” like the string of fate pointing from the person who is looking for said object/person in the direction of what they’re looking for. As long the item is close (within 100 ft or so) the string end can be seen. If the two are further apart than that however the string is invisible since it is “stretched too thin.” Only the tail end of the string is visible, not the middle of it, so there’s no conveniently marked path involved. A person would basically have to be side by side with the object for the entire string to show up at this power level.
Note: I’d like the mod’s input on whether or not it would be reasonable for both the searcher and lost item's end of the string to be visible or if that should be saved for a power upgrade. (eg Joe’s missing sock points back towards Joe if Adrien happens upon it in the hallway while Joe is messing up his drawers trying to find that darn sock in the next room over.)
Active ability: Thread Manipulation. This works similar to Mami’s ribbon powers in the original Madoka Magica series though nowhere near her level of power or expertise yet.
Adrien can create magical threads and try attaching them to enemies or making webs in an attempt to trap or slow them down. Whether or not this works depends on the speed, size, and strength of the opponent. As he’s just starting out his aim isn’t always on target and the strings are not as strong as they would be at higher magic levels.
For practical use the strings can be used to create a net or rope/swing but too much weight or force will lead to breaking and it can be cut.
The threads have no additional hidden powers (at least not at this level). The threads disappear either seconds after they’re broken or cut, or within five minutes of their creation.
Weapon: A sabre like that used in traditional duels. (Think Princess Bride) At home Adrien takes fencing lessons. It’s a thin blade faintly resembling a giant sewing needle, keeping with the fashion-theme of his powers. It has no special abilities at this level.
